This is because often cats choose who they want to take up with. If a cat sees you as his caretaker and really likes you he becomes very affectionate towards you making him an excellent companion.
Another reason cats are such common household pets is their cleanliness. Cats are among the cleanest creatures around constantly grooming themselves making sure that they are always as clean as possible. This makes them highly valued by most people as a low maintenance pet.
