For Dede Wilsey, strong values have been a part of her life since the very first days. She comes from a family that includes prominent political and business figures, people who were able to pull through the Great Depression that many thought might end the United States before it ever really had a chance to establish its dream as a culture. The fact that her grandfather, Herbert Dow, the leader of Dow Chemical, could come through that time period with a burning sense of hope and good will has always inspired Dede. Today, she does her part to improve the world around her because she believes that civic stewardship is of utmost importance. She knows that there are times when a person might not be able to give, but she does not let her affluent charitable friends go easily. She keeps at the issues until it is brought to light why her art museum project or hospital expansion is a work of powerful good that simply must be completed.

There is no obstacle to great for this woman and the word no is simply not in vocabulary when it comes to creating the funds needed to build some of San Francisco’s most impressive places. She will not rest until her mission has been accomplished and for Dede Wilsey, these missions can take a decade or more to fulfill. However, she is totally unwilling to let time slow her down, either. There are other women in her position who simply enjoy the fruits of the good life, but Dede is spending her own money, and millions of it, to bring about a better city and a better mindset for the people, a mindset as positive as her own.
